Speech Syllabus

2009-2010

Speech will be a one semester class: fall only.  It will cover the communication process, interpersonal relationships, and public speaking.  We will be using the Speech for Effective Communication textbook throughout the semester, along with other materials.

Class Content

Unlike most classes where students are silent note takers and multiple choice test takers, in speech students must be active participants in class.  If you think you can just sit back and listen you are in the wrong class.

Speech is not just about talking, it is also about listening.  It is important that you be respectful when others are talking and listen to what they have to say.  How well you listen is also a part of your grade.

By learning the fundamentals of public speaking you will gain confidence and overcome anxiety about speaking in front of a group.  After taking this class you will never again lose sleep when a teacher says; “This assignment must be presented to the class.”

You will gain experience giving informative, persuasive, and impromptu speeches.  You will also be learning how to debate issues, which is a formal way to argue.

Critical thinking and listening are required and class participation is a must.  If you do all three of these things to the best of your ability this will be a very enjoyable class.

Remember, you are not only going to be graded on assignments you turn in, tests/quizzes you take, or speeches you give, but also on class participation and being a quality listener.
