Elementary School: Fourth Grade

4th Grade Curriculum

by Kara Coffey and Sarah Garner

We use a wide variety of curriculum in our 4th grade classrooms.  Below is a summary of our different subjects and the curriculum we use for each subject.

Reading/Spelling:  We use Houghton/Mifflin, Reading, 2006 edition.  Within this series we have six different themes:

Theme 1: Journeys                Theme 2:  American Stories

Theme 3:  That's Amazing      Theme 4:  Problem Solvers

Theme 5:  Heroes                   Theme 6:  Nature Friend or Foe

Each theme has fiction and non-fiction stories.  We will spend a week with each story and spend a week with each list of spelling words as well.  The series includes a Practice Book which we will use at times as well.  This curriculum is used during our Core Reading time.  During Guided Reading we may use books from this series as well.

Math:  Our school uses Everyday Math, which was developed by the University of Chicago.  Generally we will do one lesson per day and use Friday as a "catch-up" day for things that may not have been completed during the week.  As our math lessons gets more in depth, we may only get through three lessons per week.  This series uses games and manipulatives to teach basic math concepts.
