Mrs. Hankins' & Mrs. Joslin's Herman Reading Classroom Hi!
Herman Reading Program Description The Herman Reading Program is a remedial reading program designed to assist students who have struggled with learning to read in the traditional classroom. This program provides alternative reading instruction, which includes multi-sensory strategies and emphasizes mastery of all skills before new skills are introduced. Students may be recommended to this special program by parents or teachers. Students are screened and admitted to the program according to need. Students from grades third through sixth grade participate in this program which provides daily reading and spelling practice for up to 60 minutes per day. This program is a reading intervention program designed for students who demonstrate the unique needs for which the program is designed. Students receive Herman Reading instruction in place of the reading instruction provided in the regular classroom. The program lasts from two to four years depending on the student's need. Mrs. Hankins is always available during school hours to answer any questions about this unique reading opportunity. If you have immediate questions, please call me at home in Girard. Mrs. Hankins’ Classroom Rules 1. Come to class on time. 2. Come to class with supplies and homework. 3. Treat others with respect. 4. Take turns speaking. 5. Come to class prepared to do your best. Mrs. Hankins’ Homework Policy Third grade students are not given homework. Herman Reading students grades 4-6th are given extra reading homework every evening Monday through Thursday as soon as they have completed Level 10 of the reading program. Level 10 is usually completed around the end of third grade. Stories are carefully chosen so that students can read these assignments as independently as possible. Almost all stories are at least one grade level below the child's classroom grade level to ensure success. An assignment sheet is handed out twice a month and should be kept in the student's red folder. It is included in this web site. I encourage students to practice oral reading skills with their parents at home with these homework stories. These stories are also an important component to preparation for standardized tests. Students are rewarded for completing homework on time and this experience helps them to gain much needed confidence in their academic skills. Mrs. Joslin works with students each day on spelling and writing lessons. Classroom teachers and Herman Reading Program teachers work together to improve each student's reading, spelling, and writing. 5th
